Butte, Montana — A man is dead following a police shooting in Butte after authorities say he fired multiple shots at his ex-wife and later raised a shotgun toward responding officers during a confrontation on Hope Road.

Domestic Violence Call Led to Police Response

According to the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), officers responded to a residence in the 4800 block of Hope Road after a woman called dispatch reporting that her ex-husband had fired multiple shots at her.

The woman was able to escape the home safely and was not injured during the incident.

Suspect Found Armed in Garage

Police arrived within minutes and located the suspect inside an attached garage, where he was reportedly armed with a shotgun. Officers issued commands for him to drop the weapon.

Confrontation With Officers Turned Deadly

Authorities say the situation escalated when the suspect allegedly raised the shotgun toward responding officers. Officers then opened fire, striking the man multiple times.

Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures at the scene, but the suspect was pronounced dead.

No Injuries to Officers or Victim

Officials confirmed that the woman who reported the incident and all responding officers were not physically harmed.

Investigation Taken Over by Montana DCI

The Montana Division of Criminal Investigation has taken over the case and is conducting an independent review. The suspect’s body has been transported to the State Crime Lab in Missoula for autopsy.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased man or the officers involved, as the investigation remains ongoing.
